Pignorant

Pignorant is a 2024 documentary film by Joey Carbstrong that highlights the use of carbon dioxide as a method to stun pigs prior to slaughter. The film includes undercover footage from the Pilgrim’s Pride abattoir in Ashton-under-Lyne in north-west England taken in February 2021.

The footage shows pigs being herded into metal gondolas in groups, lowered into a chamber and subjected to a high concentration of carbon dioxide gas. Pigs are seen shrieking, gasping, and writhing in apparent pain and distress.[1]

The film was released in the United Kingdom on February 10, 2024. It has a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes.[2]

Themes

Pignorant aims to bring attention to the realities of the pork industry, particularly in the UK. The film’s central themes include:

  1. Exposing the Pork Industry: The film reveals the use of CO2 gas chambers in the pork industry, a common method of killing pigs in the UK, US, Australia, and Europe. It highlights the conditions endured by pigs in these gas chambers.
  2. Investigating Animal Welfare Standards: The documentary examines various types of pig farms, including factory farms and so-called free-range pig farms. It seeks to show the actual conditions in which these animals are kept before they are sent to slaughterhouses.
  3. Highlighting the Impact on Humans: The film also discusses the psychological impact that working in slaughterhouses can have on the workers.
  4. Questioning Animal Welfare Organizations: The film critiques the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) for its support of companies that use gas chambers to kill pigs.
  5. Promoting Social Change: By interviewing experts from various disciplines, the film seeks to raise awareness about the treatment of pigs in the pork industry.
