The Marine Mammal Protection Act 1972 is a piece of legislation that was signed into law on October 21, 1972, by President Richard Nixon. The act was created to prevent marine mammals from declining beyond the point where they ceased to be significant functioning elements of the ecosystems of which they are a part.
