Nemo - orca

A group of 6 orcas were captured in Icelandic waters sometime in October 1981. They were immediately transferred to the Hafnarfjordur Aquarium where they awaited purchase.

Three males - Nemo, Neptune, and an unnamed male - were purchased by the Clacton Dolphinarium in the United Kingdom, and arrived less than 2 months after their capture. Unfortunately, the unnamed male died sometime between the end of 1981 and the beginning of 1982.

However, Nemo and Neptune seemed to adjust quickly and got along well. Soon enough, they began performing shows daily at the pier until Neptune’s death in 1983.

Nemo performed for 2 more years before he was sold to Windsor Safari Park where he met a juvenile female named Winnie. They immediately showed interest in each other and called to one another. Though, when the two were put together, they did not seem to get along as well as trainers had hoped, and were often kept separate during their time at the park.

Finally, on November 17, 1986, Nemo died due to Essential Thrombocytosis, in which the body produces too many blood platelets.
