The Kangei Maru is a whaling mother ship built in Japan, the first of its kind in 73 years.[1] Owned by Tokyo-based Kyodo Senpaku Co., it is set to succeed the Nisshin Maru, which ended its operations in November last year.[1]

The Kangei Maru weighs approximately 9,300 tons and measuring 112.6 meters long and 21 meters wide.[1] It can haul up 70-ton fin whales, which are two to three times larger than Bryde’s and sei whales loaded by the Nisshin Maru.[1] This is due to its slipway having a shallower slope than its predecessor.[1]
