On August 8, 1970, over 80 orcas were netted in Penn Cove during one of the most infamous captures in history.

Among the few retained from this capture was a young male who would later be named Jumbo.

Jumbo and another young male called Chappy were acquired by Kamogawa Sea World in Japan. This park aimed to become the first in Japan to publicly showcase orcas.

In April 1974, Chappy died and left Jumbo alone at the park.

In July 1974, Jumbo died due to liver dysfunction.
