  • The saltwater crocodile can grow up to 6.5 m (21 ft) long.
  • The spitting cobra can propel its venom up to 3 m (10 ft) into the eyes of prey.

  • Geckos can walk upside down along ceilings with footpads that have hair-like structures that form a sticky pad.

Featured article - Tokitae

On August 8, 1970, around 80 orcas from the Southern Resident population were captured as part of the infamous Penn Cove captures. Out of the captured orcas 7 are taken and sold to marine parks.

Former diver John Crowe, who appears in the documentary Blackfish, was part of the capture team at the time. He told of how, when the captures were over, there were several dead orcas in the nets. He and two other crew members were then ordered to cut the orcas open, fill their bellies with rocks, tie anchors to their tails and sink them.

When the bodies of some of the orcas washed ashore some months later, there was a huge public outcry of people concerned with the welfare of the animals as well as the impact of captures on wild orcas.

August 4th is International Clouded Leopard Day - a day to celebrate and raise awareness about one of the most elusive and threatened wild cats in the world. The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-sized cat that lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and parts of China. It is named for its distinctive coat pattern, which consists of large, irregularly shaped spots that resemble clouds.

Unfortunately, the clouded leopard is also one of the most endangered cats in the world, facing multiple threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
