Miyako (elephant)

Miyako is a solitary female Asian elephant who has been living alone at the Utsunomiya Zoo in Japan since Dec 12, 1973. She was captured from Thailand when she was six months old and has never had a companion of her own species. She suffers from chronic stress, pain, boredom and loneliness in her tiny and barren enclosure. Miyako spends her days chewing on a metal bar, shivering in the cold, or risking her life by leaning over a moat to get food from visitors.[1]
