WSC Whale Chart: A global navigational aid to protect whales was written by the World Shipping Council, a non-profit trade association that represents the liner shipping industry. The purpose and scope of the WSC Whale Chart is to assist readers with voyage planning to minimize the risk of ship strikes to cetaceans.
The document contains the following sections:
- North America: The governmental measures and well-known areas for whale protection in Canada and the United States, such as mandatory and voluntary speed restrictions, approach distances, vessel routing, and reporting systems. It also provides maps and coordinates for each area, as well as references and resources for further information.
- Central & South America: The voluntary speed recommendation in the Gulf of Panama, where ships should proceed at no more than 10 knots from 1 August to 30 November every year. It also provides a map and coordinates for the area.
- Europe: The measures and areas for whale protection in Spain, Greece, and the Mediterranean Sea, such as speed limits, vessel routing, and PSSAs. It also provides maps and coordinates for each area, as well as references and resources for further information.
- Australia & New Zealand: The measures and areas for whale protection in Australia and New Zealand, such as the Australian Whale Sanctuary, the Hauraki Gulf, and the Hellenic Trench. It also provides maps and coordinates for each area, as well as references and resources for further information.
- Asia & Middle East: The measures and areas for whale protection in Oman and Sri Lanka, such as the Port of Duqm and the south of Dondra Head. It also provides maps and coordinates for each area, as well as references and resources for further information.
