A Call to Expand Our Compassion to All Beings: Honoring Lolita

As stewards of this planet, we stand at a crossroads, a place where we must choose between the convenience of indifference and the courage of conviction. Today, we honor a life that was lived in captivity - a life that serves as a powerful reminder of the untold suffering endured by countless beings in the name of entertainment and profit.

Captive Orca at Miami Seaquarium

On August 18th, 2023, Lolita, an orca who spent over 50 years confined to a small tank at the Miami Seaquarium, passed away. Her story is one of resilience, but also one of tragedy. It's a story that compels us to reflect on the broader issue of animal captivity and what it says about our relationship with the natural world.

Lolita passed one year ago today, and her death marks a poignant moment not just for her, but for all of us who are called to protect the most vulnerable among us - whether they walk on land, swim in the ocean, or fly in the sky. As a lifelong animal advocate, social entrepreneur, and empath deeply connected to the flora and fauna of this Earth, I feel an overwhelming responsibility to use my voice to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

For over 50 years, Lolita lived in a tank so small that it violated the standards of the Animal Welfare Act. Despite years of protests and campaigns for her release, she remained trapped in captivity, performing daily for crowds under conditions that were a shadow of the life she was meant to lead in the wild. As marine biologist and orca expert, Dr. Naomi Rose poignantly put it: "Her captivity is emblematic of a human inability to see beyond our own needs, desires, and entertainment."

For over 20 years, I have dedicated my life to the compassionate care of animals. Through my companion animal wellness spa, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that every companion animal that comes through our doors is treated with the respect and love they deserve. My work as a Reiki Master and Shamanic Energy practitioner has further deepened my connection to the natural world, allowing me to channel the wisdom of spirit animals and the elemental forces of nature in service to the animals and the Earth. But this work goes beyond the physical - it is a spiritual calling, a mission rooted in the belief that every life is sacred and that we are all interconnected. This is why I am not just a vegan, but an intersectional vegan, one who recognizes that the fight for animal rights is intrinsically linked to the fight for environmental justice, social equity, and the well-being of all beings. As a single mother raising two teenage sons, I am committed to instilling these values in them, teaching them to be good stewards of this planet and to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult.

Beloved companion animals

Many of us share our lives with cherished companion animals - dogs, cats, and other beloved beings who enjoy comfort, safety, and affection within our homes. These animals are part of our families, our best friends and we go to great lengths to ensure their well-being. Yet, as we nurture and protect our companions, it's crucial to remember that there exists a much larger, often unseen world where many animals live in conditions of immense suffering and deprivation.

The story of Lolita highlights the stark contrast between the love we show to our companions and the neglect often shown to other animals. While we delight in the joy, loyalty, and friendship of our beloved fur babies, countless others - those in zoos, aquariums, and other forms of captivity - endure lives of suffering, confinement, and loss. These beings, like Lolita, are often taken from their natural habitats, cut off from their families, and confined to minuscule, substandard environments that can never truly meet their needs.

This isn't about casting blame or making anyone feel guilty for loving their companion animals. Instead, it's an invitation to broaden our compassion and consider the lives of all animals, not just those we care for personally. After all, all animals are sentient beings. Our companion animals experience feelings of joy, love, camaraderie, loyalty, friendship, fear, pain, and suffering - just as all animals do. Scientific research increasingly supports the understanding that animals across species are sentient beings, capable of complex emotions.

Recognizing this shared capacity for emotion and suffering compels us to reflect on our responsibilities. If we acknowledge that all animals can experience these deep feelings, then we must also acknowledge the ethical implications of how we treat them. And that is the point, is it not? Our choices matter.

As we reflect on Lolita's life and the broader issue of animal captivity, I invite you to explore "The Perfect Pair Dolphin Trilogy." This powerful book series is more than just a set of books; it's a movement, a wake-up call for all of us to reevaluate our choices and take a stand against the exploitative aqua entertainment industry. The authors, David and Tracy Holroyd share first-hand knowledge of the harrowing realities faced by dolphins in captivity, offering a deep and moving insight into the experiences of these highly intelligent, sentient beings. It's a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand the true cost of captivity on creatures that, like Lolita, deserve to live free and in harmony with their natural environments. Lolita's life and death compel us to look beyond the convenience of indifference and instead choose the courage of conviction. We have an opportunity - right now - to expand our compassion to all beings, not just the ones we share our homes with but also those suffering in silence around the world. Whether they are confined in tanks, cages, or factory farms, their suffering is real, and our choices can make a difference. This isn't only about feeling empathy; it's about taking action to ensure that no animal endures the same fate as Lolita.

Let us honor her memory by making conscious choices that reflect our shared humanity and the belief that every life is sacred.

1. Educate Ourselves and Others: Knowledge is the first step toward change. Take the time to learn about the broader issues affecting animals and share this knowledge with your community. Awareness is a powerful tool for transformation. Check out WikiAnimal. It's everything Animal!

2. Support Ethical Alternatives: When choosing entertainment, support sanctuaries and wildlife reserves that prioritize the well-being of animals over profit. Avoid zoos, aquariums, and other establishments that confine animals in unnatural conditions. Similarly, seek out and support cruelty-free and sustainable products in your daily life. Check out sites like Peta's cruelty free products database and the Wildlife Guardian Wizard which has largest cruelty free database available.

3. Advocate for Animal Rights: Use your voice to advocate for stronger animal protection laws and policies. Contact your government reps at the local, state and federal levels, urging them to support legislation that ends the captivity of wild animals like Lolita and dolphins in aqua entertainment facilities.

4. Tune In and Share: Listen to the remastered and groundbreaking 2-part podcast episode on The Rising Lioness: "EXPOSÉ - The Dark Secrets of the Dolphinarium Industry" and hear first-hand from author David Holroyd, a former top dolphin trainer, as he shares his journey to success in the industry, revealing pivotal moments that led him to walk away from it all. Through his heartfelt account, we gain an insider's view of the exploitative practices and moral dilemmas that plague this profit-driven industry. Share it with others. Let Lolita's story inspire us to expand our circle of compassion and advocate for a world where all beings are treated with dignity and respect. Together, we can create a future where every being - whether they walk on land, swim in the ocean or fly in the sky - is treated with the respect, dignity, and kindness they deserve.

As I publish this article on my birthday, a day shared with the tragic anniversary of Lolita's passing, I invite you to join me on this journey of compassion, awareness, and advocacy. In the coming weeks and months, I will continue to share my thoughts, experiences, and wisdom, offering a voice for the voiceless as we strive to create a kinder, more inclusive world for all beings - where peace, love, happiness, and freedom from suffering reign supreme.

I also welcome everyone to explore The Rising Lioness Show, where I host conversations with remarkable animal and Earth advocates, healers, and experts who share their powerful stories and insights.
